How to Block Spam Calls

Cut down on robocalls and unknown callers with the settings already built into your phone.

  1. Silence unknown callers (iPhone)

Settings > Apps > Phone > "Silence Unknown Callers." Calls from numbers not in your contacts go straight to voicemail without ringing. On Android, open the Phone app > three dots > Settings > "Caller ID & spam" and turn on "Filter spam calls."

  2. Block individual numbers as they come in

In your recent calls list, tap the (i) or the number, scroll down, and choose "Block this Caller." Blocked numbers can't call, text, or FaceTime you.

  3. Turn on your carrier's free spam protection

AT&T ActiveArmor, Verizon Call Filter, and T-Mobile Scam Shield are free apps that label or auto-block known scam numbers at the network level. Install your carrier's app and enable blocking.

  4. Register on the National Do Not Call list

Add your number free at donotcall.gov. It won't stop scammers who already ignore the law, but it cuts legitimate telemarketing within 31 days.
