How to Deactivate a Facebook Account

Temporarily shut down your Facebook profile so it disappears from the site, with the option to come back anytime.

  1. Open Settings and go to Accounts Center

In the Facebook app, tap your profile picture, then Settings & privacy, then Settings. On the web, click your profile picture in the top-right and choose Settings & privacy, then Settings. Accounts Center sits at the top of the settings screen.

  2. Find Account ownership and control

Inside Accounts Center, tap Personal details, then Account ownership and control. This is where Facebook keeps deactivation and deletion for all linked accounts.

  3. Choose Deactivation or deletion

Tap Deactivation or deletion, select the Facebook account you want to pause, then choose Deactivate account — not Delete, which permanently erases everything after a grace period. Tap Continue.

  4. Enter your password and confirm

Type your password, skip or answer the optional survey, and confirm deactivation. Your profile, posts, and photos become invisible to others immediately, but nothing is deleted.

  5. Know how reactivation works

Logging back in (or using Facebook to sign in to another app) reactivates the account automatically, so stay logged out everywhere. Messenger keeps working unless you deactivate it separately in its own settings.
