How to Declutter Your Home

Clear clutter room by room using sorting categories and a one-in-one-out habit that lasts.

  1. Start small with one drawer or surface

Don't tackle the whole house at once. Pick a single drawer, shelf, or countertop so you get a quick win and build momentum without burning out.

  2. Sort everything into four piles

Use Keep, Donate, Trash, and Relocate. Touch each item once and decide immediately. The Relocate box is for things that belong in another room — deal with it after, not mid-sort.

  3. Apply the 12-month rule for keep decisions

If you haven't used or worn it in a year and it has no real sentimental or seasonal value, let it go. When in doubt, ask whether you'd buy it again today.

  4. Remove the donate and trash piles immediately

Bag donations and put them in your car the same day, and take out the trash right away. Clutter that lingers by the door tends to creep back into the house.

  5. Adopt a one-in-one-out rule

To keep clutter from returning, remove one similar item every time you bring something new home. This maintains your progress without another big purge later.
