How to Fix a Clogged Sink

Clear a slow or blocked sink drain with a plunger, a baking soda flush, or by cleaning out the P-trap.

  1. Remove debris and try a plunger

Pull out any visible gunk from the drain. Block the overflow hole or the second basin with a wet rag, add enough water to cover the plunger cup, and plunge firmly 10 to 15 times.

  2. Flush with baking soda and vinegar

Pour about half a cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain, wait 15 minutes while it fizzes, then flush with a kettle of hot water.

  3. Clean out the P-trap

Place a bucket under the curved pipe below the sink. Unscrew both slip nuts by hand or with channel-lock pliers, remove the P-trap, and clear out trapped hair, grease, and food.

  4. Reassemble and check for leaks

Reattach the P-trap, hand-tighten the slip nuts (snug, not over-tight), run warm water for a minute, and check the joints for drips. Tighten slightly more if water seeps out.
