How to Fix a Zipper That Won't Close

Fix a zipper that splits open or won't stay closed using a common pair of pliers.

1. Check for fabric or thread caught in the slider

   Gently pull any snagged material free. If debris is stuck inside the slider, use a needle or pin to clear it out.

2. Slide the zipper pull all the way down to the bottom stop

   You need a clean starting point. If the slider came off entirely, re-thread it onto the track from the bottom.

3. Gently squeeze the slider with pliers to tighten it

   The most common cause of a zipper not closing is a slider that has widened over time. Use needle-nose pliers to press the top and bottom plates slightly closer together. Apply light pressure — too much will lock the slider.

4. Test the zipper by slowly zipping it up and down a few times

   It should now close without splitting. If it still gaps open, repeat the squeeze with a tiny bit more pressure. If the teeth themselves are bent or missing, the zipper will need to be replaced.
