How to Fix Bad Breath

Target the real sources of bad breath with better cleaning, hydration, and a few daily habits.

  1. Brush and floss thoroughly

Brush for two minutes twice a day and floss once daily. Most odor comes from bacteria on teeth and between them, so cleaning these surfaces removes the source.

  2. Clean your tongue

Gently scrape or brush the back of your tongue, where odor-causing bacteria collect. A dedicated tongue scraper works well and is more effective than brushing alone.

  3. Stay hydrated and chew sugar-free gum

A dry mouth feeds odor, so sip water through the day. Chewing sugar-free gum boosts saliva, which naturally rinses bacteria away.

  4. Limit triggers and replace your toothbrush

Cut back on strong foods like onion, garlic, and coffee, avoid tobacco, and swap your toothbrush every few months so it stays effective.

  5. See a dentist if it persists

If bad breath continues despite good habits, see a dentist or doctor, since it can point to gum disease, a dental infection, sinus issues, or other underlying causes.
