How to Get Rid of Hiccups

Simple breathing and swallowing tricks that calm the diaphragm and stop a hiccup spell.

  1. Hold your breath briefly

Take a normal breath in, hold it for about 10 to 20 seconds, then breathe out slowly. The mild buildup of carbon dioxide can settle the diaphragm. Repeat a few times if needed.

  2. Sip cold water slowly

Take several small, steady sips of cold water, or drink slowly from the far side of a glass while leaning forward. The swallowing rhythm helps reset the irritated nerve.

  3. Breathe into a paper bag

Breathe gently in and out of a small paper bag for a few breaths, keeping it loose around your nose and mouth. Stop if you feel lightheaded, and never use a plastic bag.

  4. Try a spoon of sugar or pull your knees up

Swallowing a teaspoon of granulated sugar, or sitting and hugging your knees to your chest, can interrupt the hiccup reflex.

  5. See a doctor for hiccups that will not stop

Most hiccups pass within minutes. If they last more than 48 hours, keep returning, or interfere with eating, breathing, or sleep, see a doctor, since persistent hiccups can signal an underlying condition.
