How to Number Pages in Word

Add automatic page numbers to a Word document and control where they start.

  1. Open the Insert tab and click "Page Number"

It's in the Header & Footer group. A menu lets you choose where the number goes.

  2. Pick a position and style

Choose Top of Page or Bottom of Page, then an alignment (left, center, right). Word inserts the number and opens the header/footer area.

  3. Skip the number on the title page (optional)

With the header/footer open, check "Different First Page" on the Header & Footer Design tab. The first page's number disappears while the rest stay numbered.

  4. Change the starting number or format

Click Page Number > "Format Page Numbers" to start at a different number or use roman numerals. Click "Close Header and Footer" (or double-click the body) when finished.
