How to Pitch a Tent

Set up a dome or freestanding tent quickly so it stays dry and sturdy overnight.

1. Pick and clear the spot

   Choose flat ground away from low areas where water collects. Clear rocks, sticks, and pinecones so they do not poke through the floor or tear it.

2. Lay the footprint and tent

   Put down a ground tarp or footprint, then spread the tent body on top with the door facing where you want it. Note which way the rainfly will go.

3. Assemble and insert poles

   Snap the shock-corded poles together, then thread them through the sleeves or clip the tent to them. Crossing poles usually form an X over the top.

4. Raise and stake the corners

   Seat the pole ends into the corner grommets so the tent pops up. Pull each corner taut and drive a stake through each loop at a 45-degree angle away from the tent.

5. Add the rainfly and guy lines

   Drape the rainfly over the top, clip or buckle it to the corners, and stake out the guy lines so it is tight. A taut fly with a gap from the tent wall keeps rain off and air flowing.
