How to Remove Burnt Stains From a Pan

Lift stubborn burnt-on food and scorch marks from a stainless steel pan without heavy scrubbing.

  1. Deglaze with simmering water

Add enough water to cover the burnt area and bring it to a gentle simmer for 5-10 minutes. The heat and steam loosen much of the stuck-on residue so it lifts away with a wooden spoon.

  2. Add baking soda

Pour 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda into the simmering water. It reacts with the burnt food and gently abrades the scorch. Let it bubble for a few minutes, then scrape with a wooden or silicone tool.

  3. Make a paste for stubborn spots

Empty the pan and sprinkle baking soda over any remaining stains, adding just enough water to form a thick paste. Let it sit 15-30 minutes, then scrub with a non-scratch pad.

  4. Finish with vinegar if needed

For lingering discoloration, add a splash of white vinegar to the baking soda — the fizzing helps lift residue. Rinse well and dry. Avoid steel wool on nonstick or coated pans.
