How to Remove Links from a Watch

Resize a metal watch band at home using a pin pusher or small tool.

  1. Find the arrows on the inside of the band

Flip the watch over and look for tiny arrows engraved on the links — these show the direction to push the pins out. Only remove links from both sides evenly to keep the clasp centered.

  2. Push the pin out in the direction of the arrow

Place the watch on a firm surface. Use a pin pusher, small screwdriver, or thumbtack to press the pin through. It only needs to move enough to grab from the other side.

  3. Pull the pin out and separate the link

Once the pin pokes through, pull it out the rest of the way with your fingers or small pliers. Keep the pins and removed links in a bag — you may need them later.

  4. Reconnect the band and reinsert the pin

Line the remaining links back up and push the pin in against the arrow direction until it sits flush. Test that it clicks securely, then try the watch on. Repeat on the other side if needed.
