How to Remove Static From Clothes

Kill static cling on the spot and prevent it from coming back, especially in dry winter air.

  1. Touch metal to discharge it fast

For an instant fix, run a metal hanger, safety pin, or any metal object lightly over the inside and outside of the garment, or touch a metal doorknob. The metal grounds the static charge and the cling drops immediately.

  2. Dampen lightly to neutralize

Static thrives in dry conditions. Lightly mist the garment with water from a spray bottle or wipe it down with a damp cloth, then smooth it out. Adding a little moisture lets the charge dissipate. A dab of unscented lotion on your skin under the fabric also stops clothes from clinging to you.

  3. Rub with a dryer sheet

Wipe a dryer sheet over the staticky fabric — the same anti-static coating that works in the dryer neutralizes the charge on contact. Keep one in your bag or desk for cling emergencies.

  4. Prevent it at laundry time

Add a dryer sheet or wool dryer balls to each load, or pour a half cup of white vinegar into the rinse cycle as a natural fabric softener. Over-drying synthetics is the biggest cause of static, so pull loads out slightly damp or use a lower heat setting.
