How to Remove Under-Eye Bags

Reduce puffiness under the eyes with cold compresses, sleep and salt changes, and allergy control — and know what needs a professional.

  1. Apply a cold compress in the morning

Hold a clean washcloth soaked in cold water, chilled spoons, or a gel eye mask against the area for 5 to 10 minutes. Cold constricts vessels and drains morning puffiness quickly.

  2. Sleep more, and slightly elevated

Aim for 7 to 9 hours and add an extra pillow so fluid doesn't pool under your eyes overnight. Sleeping on your back helps more than on your stomach or side.

  3. Cut back on salt and evening alcohol

Salty dinners and alcohol both cause fluid retention that shows up under the eyes the next morning. Drink water through the day and keep late-night salty snacks in check.

  4. Treat allergies and try a caffeine eye cream

Seasonal allergies inflame the under-eye area, so an over-the-counter antihistamine can visibly help. A daily eye cream with caffeine temporarily tightens and de-puffs the skin.

  5. See a professional for persistent bags

Bags that never improve are often inherited fat pads or age-related skin changes that home care cannot shift. A dermatologist can discuss options like fillers, lasers, or lower-lid surgery — and rule out thyroid, kidney, or other medical causes of swelling.
