Thread, tension, and lock a ratchet strap so your load stays put without damaging the webbing.
Hook the fixed strap end and the ratchet end to rated anchor points or frame rails, not to wiring, lines, or plastic trim. Keep hooks facing inward so they cannot pop loose.
Open the ratchet fully so it lies flat, then thread the free strap up through the slot in the center spool. Pull the slack through by hand until the strap is reasonably snug.
Pump the handle back and forth; each stroke winds webbing onto the drum and tightens the load. Stop while the strap is firm and the cargo is held, but before the webbing starts to crush or deform what you are securing.
Push the handle fully shut until it clicks flat against the body. This engages the pawl and locks the spool so it cannot unwind.
Tie off or wrap the loose tail so it cannot flap or drag. Recheck tension after a few minutes of driving, since loads often settle and straps loosen slightly.
