How to Soothe a Sunburn

Cool, moisturize, and protect sunburned skin to ease the sting while it heals.

  1. Cool the skin

Take a cool (not ice-cold) shower or bath, or apply a cool, damp cloth for 10 to 15 minutes. This draws out heat and eases the burning feeling. Avoid putting ice directly on the skin.

  2. Moisturize while skin is damp

After cooling, gently pat dry and apply a fragrance-free moisturizer or pure aloe vera gel. Reapply often. Skip products with petroleum, benzocaine, or alcohol, which can trap heat or irritate.

  3. Hydrate and ease the discomfort

Drink extra water, since sunburn pulls fluid to the skin and can dehydrate you. An over-the-counter pain reliever taken as directed can reduce pain and swelling.

  4. Protect the area while it heals

Wear loose, soft clothing and keep the burn out of the sun. Do not pop blisters; leaving them intact protects against infection and helps healing.

  5. Seek medical care for severe burns

See a doctor if you have widespread blistering, fever, chills, severe pain, confusion, or signs of dehydration or infection, as these need professional treatment.
