How to Tie a Tie (Four-in-Hand Knot)

Tie a classic four-in-hand knot in under a minute — the simplest and most versatile tie knot.

1. Drape the tie around your collar with the wide end on your right, hanging about 12 inches lower than the narrow end

   The seam should face inward, toward your shirt.

2. Cross the wide end over the narrow end

   This forms an X just below your chin.

3. Loop the wide end under the narrow end and back across the front again

   You should now see the front (smooth side) of the wide end facing out, with one horizontal wrap completed.

4. Bring the wide end up through the loop around your neck from underneath

   Hold the front wrap loosely with a finger so it doesn't tighten yet.

5. Slide the wide end down through the front wrap you held open, then pull down gently to tighten

   Slide the knot up toward your collar by holding the narrow end and pushing the knot into place. Adjust until snug and centered.
