How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

Use the PASS method to safely operate a fire extinguisher in an emergency.

1. Pull the pin

   Twist and pull the metal pin at the top of the extinguisher to break the tamper seal.

2. Aim at the base of the fire

   Point the nozzle or hose low, toward the base of the flames — not at the top of the fire.

3. Squeeze the handle

   Apply steady, even pressure to the lever to release the extinguishing agent.

4. Sweep side to side

   Move the nozzle in a sweeping motion across the base of the fire until it is fully out. Back away if it reignites.
